Yo, Philly in the News
- TWU Local 234 apparently thinks their pension should be the only retirement fund, pension, 401(k), etc. in the universe that is impervious to stock market fluctuations and a recession economy. According to the union's attorney, they're willing to stay on strike until SEPTA and the state go pull some cash off the magical money trees to pump the pension fund back up so that it can fulfill all potential outstanding payments. Apparently, the union's Martian leader hasn't alerted its members to how retirement funds work here on Earth.
- And in other SEPTA strike news, the union is apparently considering a "revised offer" from SEPTA. Might the strike end by the evening rush hour, and perhaps more importantly, does the "revised offer" give in to some of the union's demands, which will pretty much require commuters to open up our checkbooks to cover increased costs?
- Speaking of commuters, PennDOT says that traffic on local highways isn't really that much worse since the strike began, despite all evidence to the contrary.
- Time to start thinking about what the Phillies may and should do in the off-season. We'll offer our own thoughts next week.
- Penn homecoming is this weekend, and part of the festivities include today's ground breaking on the 24-acre Penn Park, which will include athletic fields, a bike path, and an elevated walking path.
- Today's AccuWeather forecast: 49 degrees with less wind today than yesterday. Cold and clear tonight, and the weekend looks really good for this time of year.

penndot's report is a little silly. of course, there isn't a big increase in highway driving - the regional rail is still running so all the suburban commuters are still using it.
it's the inner city they should report upon.
That was my first thought, too. I'm not surprised that the highways aren't a major problem—at least beyond the clusterf&^#s that they are on any given day, strike or no strike.
